- Start: Adventure playground Forest Castle at Kirchsteig
An experience from the start
At the start awaits a highlight for children: the new adventure playground "Forest Castle" with slides, climbing elements, and a small creek. While the little ones romp around, adults can relax and take a deep breath. Then the route leads on a longer walk directly into the mixed forest. Soon the first viewpoint is reached: the Hohe Eifer, with about 210 meters the highest point of the route. From the platform on the edge of the rock face, there is a wide view over Meißen to Albrechtsburg and the cathedral. Behind the platform lie the traces of an old castle site – once a guard post, now a quiet place for hikers.
The main goal of the route, however, is the Götterfelsen. It towers above the Triebischtal valley and carries a distinctive golden summit cross. From here, an impressive view opens into the valley. The black rock consists of pitchstone – a rare volcanic rock unique worldwide in this region. A small plaque on the cross commemorates the foundation of the State School St. Afra – a high school for particularly gifted students and a place with a lot of history.
Pure nature right on your doorstep
The approximately 5-kilometer circular route leads through one of the most beautiful city forests in Saxony. Here grow gnarled beeches and old oaks, chaffinches fly between the branches, and with a bit of luck, one can spot signs of badgers. The Triebischtal landscape protection area is a refuge for many animal and plant species. Along the path, information boards provide exciting insights into nature – from rare birds to the importance of the forest for the city's climate.
A worthwhile detour leads to Königssee, a former quarry. The dark pitchstone walls and the small pond amid the trees create a calm, almost magical atmosphere.
For the whole family
The Götterfelsenweg is easy to walk and also suitable for families with children. There are many rest opportunities, ideal for short breaks or a picnic in the green. At every season, the excursion is worthwhile: in spring, the forest floor blooms, in summer, the leafy canopy provides shade, and in autumn, the forest turns into a colorful sea of hues.
The Götterfelsenweg combines nature, history, and beautiful views – right in the middle of the Meißen city forest. Those who hike here quickly realize: You don't have to travel far to find real experiences.

Directions
The route starts at Kirchsteig, directly at the adventure playground "Forest Castle." You follow the path straight into the forest, always along the Gainitzbach creek. After about 400 m, keep slightly right and follow the valley along the inflow of the city forest spring. After about 450 m, turn left, cross the creek, and walk about 300 m on the other side of the valley in the opposite direction. Then turn right and follow the Gainitzbach again.
At the next crossroads, go left, cross the creek, and walk along the forest edge to the Hohe Eifer, where you can make a detour by keeping left. Back on the original route, go straight into the forest interior to the next detour “Schöne Aussicht.” From there, keep left and again walk along the forest edge until at the next fork you reach the Götterfelsen straight ahead. There, turn right onto the path, then at the next fork keep left and follow the path along the allotment gardens to the next crossroads.
Here you can make a detour left to Königssee or continue the route right and go down the steep path into the valley. There, go left along the forest edge and “An der Hohen Eifer” back to Kirchsteig and thus the starting point.

Be careful at the viewpoints (Götterfelsen, Schöne Aussicht, or Hohe Eifer) as the rocks sometimes drop steeply and railings are not present everywhere!
