The year 2024 was all about the Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich, who explored the Elbe Sandstone Mountains on many hikes and captured them in sketches. But even beyond his anniversary year, he is always present in Saxon Switzerland. With this guided tour along the Caspar David Friedrich Trail we embark on a journey into the pictorial world of the painter.
At the beginning of the hike, we encounter the painter in an impressive virtual way: the immersive exhibition "CDFriedrich inspires" brings his works to life and gets us in the mood for the tour ahead. We then take time to contemplate nature along the way, which we can rediscover as motifs in Friedrich's nature studies and paintings.
The hike is 15 kilometers long, takes around 5 to 6 hours and covers around 370 metres in altitude. Smaller breaks are taken along the way.

- The meeting point is the Bad Schandau Tourist Service on the historic market square (Markt 1–11). It is centrally located in the old town and is a popular gathering place for events, guided tours, and exploring the city. Getting there is easy and convenient—especially by public transportation.
By train:
Bad Schandau is easily accessible via the S1 S-Bahn line (Dresden–Schöna) as well as long-distance train service. From the Bad Schandau train station, you can take the ferry across the Elbe River directly to the city center in just a few minutes. The ferry service is accessible and runs regularly.
By ferry:
The Elbe ferry connects the station forecourt with the city side and takes you to the market square in just a few minutes’ walk.
By the Kirnitzschtalbahn or bus:
The historic Kirnitzschtalbahn and several bus lines (VVO) stop near the city center, allowing you to travel conveniently almost right to your doorstep.
By car:
If you’re arriving by car, you’ll find several public parking lots within walking distance (e.g., Elbkai, Kirnitzschtalstraße parking lot). Price info
