Hike along the Caspar David Friedrich Trail
The year 2024 was entirely dedicated to the Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich, who explored the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and captured them in sketches. But even beyond his anniversary year, his presence is always felt in Saxon Switzerland. On this guided tour along the Caspar David Friedrich Trail we embark on a journey into the visual world of the painter.
At the start of the hike, we’ll encounter the painter in an impressive virtual way: The immersive exhibition “CDFriedrich Inspires” brings his works to life and sets the mood for the upcoming tour. Afterward, we’ll take time along the way to observe nature, which we can rediscover as motifs in Friedrich’s nature studies and paintings.
The hike is 15 kilometers long, takes about 5 to 6 hours, and involves an elevation gain of approximately 370 meters. We’ll take short breaks along the way.

Directions & Parking facilities
- The meeting point is the Bad Schandau Tourist Service on the historic market square (Markt 1–11). It is centrally located in the old town and is a popular gathering place for events, guided tours, and exploring the city. Getting there is easy and convenient—especially by public transportation.
By train:
Bad Schandau is easily accessible via the S1 S-Bahn line (Dresden–Schöna) as well as long-distance rail service. From the Bad Schandau train station, you can take the ferry across the Elbe River directly into downtown in just a few minutes. The ferry service is accessible and runs regularly.
By ferry:
The Elbe ferry connects the station plaza with the city side and takes you to the market square in just a few minutes’ walk.
By Kirnitzschtalbahn or bus:
The historic Kirnitzschtalbahn and several bus lines (VVO) stop near the city center, allowing for a convenient trip almost right to your doorstep.
By car:
If you’re arriving by car, you’ll find several public parking lots within walking distance (e.g., Elbkai, Kirnitzschtalstraße parking lot). Price info
