Traditional trips with the Kirnitzschtalbahn

The Kirnitzschtalbahn has been transporting hikers, tourists and spa guests since 1898. For around 8 kilometers, the metre-gauge railroad accompanies the Kirnitzsch river on its course through the bizarre rocky world of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains from Bad Schandau to the Lichtenhain waterfall and back.

The popular traditional trips take place on 1 May, at Whitsun, at the Kirnitzschtal Festival on the last weekend in July and on 3 October, when the museum carriages from 1926, 1928 and 1938 are used. On these days, the historic tramcars supplement the regular service of the Kirnitzschtalbahn.

Between 10 am and 5 pm, visitors have the opportunity to experience travel in the Wilhelminian era around 1930. The museum carriages with their lovingly restored wooden and leather seats create a special atmosphere. As soon as you board the nostalgic carriages, you are immersed in the era of the early 20th century. Conductors move through the fully occupied carriages and sell tickets from tear-off tabs while taking change from wallets.

For the traditional trips, special tickets are issued that are modeled on the original tickets from 1920. The proceeds from the sale of these special tickets contribute to the preservation of the historic vehicles.

Hiking trails lead from all stations to magnificent vantage points such as the Winterberge, the Schrammsteine, the Affensteinen and the Kuhstall. The Hinterhermsdorf locks are also a popular hiking destination. Numerous restaurants along the route invite hikers to take a break and linger. The Kirnitzschtalbahn runs daily all year round.
