Ilmenau Canal: Where eel and beer have been at home for over a century
Over a century ago, in 1896, a bridge keeper's house was built on this very spot. The Ilmenau Canal, which has connected the Ilmenau with the Elbe since that time, served as an important shipping route for salt from Lüneburg and vegetables from neighboring Bardowick. Even the first bridge keeper served beer here. The great-grandfather of the current owner smoked the first eel behind the venerable "Wilhelmsbrücke". The "food and drink menu" at the time was simple and consisted only of eel, bread and beer. Today, the Aal-Krug offers a varied menu. But the eel is still smoked in the same way as it was 125 years ago.
