The Brodhaus is located directly on the market square in Einbeck and is the only surviving guild house in the town. First mentioned in a document in 1333, the building served the EinbeckerBäckergilde as a place for celebrations and meetings, but also provided accommodation for traveling journeymen bakers. Today, only the historicalbakers' guild signon the cantilever of the building bears witness to this.
The chronicler Johannes Letzner reported in 1596 that the building was a gift from a monk to the bakers' guild. In return, the monk demanded the permanent free supply of communion wafers to the surrounding churches. The churches also supported the bakers' guildin the new building after the town fire of 1540.
The Brodhaus was rebuilt in 1552 after the town fire and was both the seat of the Einbeck bakers' guild and an inn. In 1801, the Brodhaus was sold to an innkeeper and has been a "normal" restaurant ever since.
This makes the Brodhaus one of the oldest inns in Lower Saxony! Even today, the well-known restaurantof the same name still serves Einbecker beerfrom the breweryon tap.
The half-timbered building is an example of the Einbecker late Gothic and early Renaissance.
