Protestant Reformed parishes emerged during the Reformation of the 16th century, inspired in particular by the theological insights of the Zurich reformer Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531) and the Geneva reformer John Calvin (1509-1564). Both advocated a radical renewal (reformation) of the church. They abandoned the traditional mass and celebrated their services with prayer, Bible readings, sermons and psalm singing.
Today, the number of Christians of the Reformed confession is estimated at over 70 million worldwide.
In Germany, Christians of Lutheran and Reformed confessions were united in one Protestant church in many areas during the 19th century. In north-western Germany, however, the two denominations remained independent and coexisted.
The Protestant Reformed Church was founded in 1882 when Emperor Wilhelm I allowed the Reformed congregations in his Prussian territory to convene their own synod.
Reformed congregations in East Frisia, the county of Bentheim, the county of Lingen and the county of Plesse joined together to form an independent church.
Reformed congregations outside Prussia and congregations with Huguenot roots have joined the Protestant Reformed Church over the years.
Today, 146 congregations with around 188,000 members belong to the Protestant Reformed Church.
