According to old records, St. Mary's Church was built in 1006 and its smaller part, today's choir, would be one of the oldest in the whole area. The interior of the Gimter St. Mary´s Church has been redesigned several times. In 1956, the wooden altar and pulpit walls were removed and the church was given back its simplicity. In 1980, the baroque altarpiece was reconstructed with paintings by the local Johann Daniel Sarrazin (1680). In autumn 2002, builders found an oak Jesus head on the church tower floor, which probably dates back to the 14th century at the latest and may have been part of a crucifix on the altar of the Gimter church.
