Church
The church was first mentioned in the 12th century and was initially named in 1260.
The town church, which is dedicated to St Mauritius (Moritz), was given its shape by Heinrich von Münch, the former lord of the castle in Münchenbernsdorf. The church, which was constructed in Romanesque style and extended in Late Gothic style, has a unified, imposing and attractive appearance despite various differences. When you enter the church, you immediately see the beautifully carved altar depicting the coronation of Mary. The church’s altar was made in the workshops of Valentin Lendenstreich in 1505 and is extremely valuable in terms of its artistry. It is located in the chancel, which was renewed in Late Gothic style in 1907. The altar to Mary was probably bought by the church’s patron, Simon von Ungnaden, in 1556 and bequeathed to the church. There is a picture of “Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia” under the altar. There is a font in the middle of the church, which is 800 years old and was made of sandstone.
