Stables at the Wasserburg Gebhardshagen

  • Theatre

The moated castle in Gebhardshagen, built around the year 1000, is one of the oldest in the state of Brunswick; the noble lords of Hagen are first mentioned in records dating back to 1129.

Around 1186, the castle was referred to as *castro, quod appellatur Haghen* (a castle called Hagen). Located on the important military and trade route between Minden and Halberstadt, the castle became the ancestral seat of the von Hagen family by around 1280, though little further information about them has survived. The castle’s walls and moats served to defend against enemy raids and sieges, which were quite common in this area at the time. The castle’s name dates back to Knight Gebhard von Borgfeld, who took over the castle from the Dukes of Wolfenbüttel in 1280.

Currently, a newly built sports hall on the grounds is used for tournaments and competitions of all kinds. Cultural events take place in the converted horse stable. Rooms in the old manor house have also been refurbished and are very popular for readings, conferences, and even as a wedding venue. Festivals such as the Medieval Festival during summer vacation and the Christmas market on the first weekend of Advent have become regular events in the castle’s inner courtyard.
