Historical origins of the collegiate

The history of the Levern collegiate church dates back to the 12th century. It was originally the church of a convent used by Benedictine nuns. The exact date of its foundation is not clearly documented, but it is assumed that the convent was founded around 1140. The nuns, who belonged to the Benedictine order, had the task of leading a life of prayer and work. Over the centuries, the convent underwent numerous changes and adapted to political and ecclesiastical developments.

Architectural features

The collegiate church in Levern is an impressive example of the various architectural styles that have developed over the centuries. Originally built in the Romanesque style, Gothic and Baroque elements were added over time. The current building harmoniously combines these different styles and demonstrates the versatility of medieval and early modern architecture.

One particularly outstanding feature of the church is the west tower, which dates back to Romanesque times. Its massive walls and simple yet powerful forms are typical of 12th century architecture. Inside the church, there are numerous Gothic lancet windows that flood the church with natural light and create a spiritual atmosphere.

The change brought about by the Reformation

With the introduction of the Reformation in the region in the 16th century, the monastery in Levern was also secularized. As a result of the Reformation, the Benedictine nuns had to leave the convent and it was converted into a noble ladies' convent. It was now mainly open to noble women who wanted to lead a pious life without joining a convent. However, the church itself remained a central location for church services and religious celebrations in the region.
