There are not many cities in Europe symbolising European history the way the two cities of Görlitz and Zgorzelec do: division after World War II, tentative rapprochement, closed borders and intensive joint developments since the political turn in the GDR in 1989.
Together with Zgorzelec, the Polish part of the city which is located on the eastern side of the Neisse River, the city of Görlitz proclaimed itself an European City in 1998 and shows how people from two different nations are able to overcome borders. Since the extension of the European Union in 2004, the city has literally moved to the centre of our continent. Now the city‘s further exciting development in the middle of Europe is based on international interaction.

Directions
The tour continues towards the Polish village Radomierzyce/Radmeritz, where the border crossing point to Germany is located. Follow the signposting of the Oder-Neisse cycle path to Görlitz. On the way back to Görlitz it is possible to have a stopover in Hagenwerder to see a bucket-wheel excavator and the Neisse Viaduct in Görlitz. You will have a great view of the viaduct from the cycle path. The viaduct is brickwork arch bridge which connects Görlitz and Zgorzelec in Poland.
You will pass the Obermühle where you can have break and relax. The Landskron Brewery is located a few steps away from the Obermühle. Here it is possible to have a guided tour to learn more about the manufacturing of beer and of course you can taste beer, too. A trip to the brewery is always worthwhile. The bicycle tour ends at the Old Town Bridge (Altstadtbrücke).
