Directions

From the railway station, we cycle to the other side of the road and use the cycle path over the city bridge to cross the Elbe. Shortly afterwards, we turn right and follow the Elbe cycle path to Stadt Wehlen. Here we turn left uphill just before the market square and shortly afterwards turn right into Wehlener Grund. The path is part of the official national park cycle routes. After a few relaxed kilometres on the Elbe cycle path, the route now climbs steadily uphill, the surface is only asphalted at the beginning and then loose. After four kilometres of climbing, we arrive at Basteistraße and cycle to the Bastei Hotel, where we lock up our bikes to walk to the Bastei Bridge and the various viewpoints and soak up the views.

After enough landscape and rocky flashes, it's back to the bike. If you want, you can cycle back the same way. We opt for an alternative and cycle the entire Bastei road to the large car park. To avoid the car traffic, we leave the road here and cycle parallel along the Neuweg. We cross Lohmen and cycle along the Sandweg and then Wehlener Straße to Dorf Wehlen. A detour to the Fiedler dairy farm allows us to top up our provisions at the cheese and milk vending machines.

We leave the village straight away and drive between fields in the direction of Herrenleite. Sandstone is quarried here. Especially in summer, it is pleasantly cool here in the forest parallel to the Kratzbach stream. We pass the Herrenleite light railway museum, which is open on Saturdays during the season. We roll back down to the Elbe via Mockethal and back to Pirna.
