The Ellerburg-Aue cycle path accompanies the Große Aue from its source to its mouth and leads past important highlights in the neighboring villages. The Große Aue is the third largest left tributary of the Weser after the Hunte and Diemel and is 88 kilometers long. It rises on the south side of the Wiehengebirge in the municipality of Rödinghausen and flows into the Weser below Liebenau, halfway to Nienburg near Binnen.

With this new connecting route between the district of Herford, the western part of the district of Minden-Lübbecke and the Weser in the district of Nienburg, you can experience in a fascinating way how the Große Aue grows from a small trickle into a respectable river in a beautiful landscape with beautiful places.

As a cyclist, you cycle alternately in six stages on both sides of the river through partly unspoilt landscapes characterized by meadows, forests, agriculture, corn and asparagus fields, lakes, farms, mills and beautiful manor houses. The cycle route is a circular tour from the Ellerburg in Fiestel over six stages, mainly around the Große Aue back to the Ellerburg. It covers a distance of 337 kilometers by bike and crosses the Große Aue a whopping 21 times.

As the cycle tour is a circular route, you can hop on at any point or cycle in the opposite direction. There are train connections in several places, so you can also cycle individual stages. The first four stages are flat in the area around the Große Aue to Nienburg. From there, take the train to the southern point of Rödinghausen to Bruchmühlen station. The train runs every one to two hours and takes bicycles with it. The journey time is between one and a half and three hours.

From there, the route takes you past the spring in somewhat hilly terrain via Hüllhorst, Lübbecke and Preußisch Oldendorf back to Ellerburg. This cycle path was awarded 2nd prize in the Villages with Ideas competition in the Minden-Lübbecke district.
