Characteristic for this half-day cycle tour are the total of 14 mills located in both German and French territory inviting you to linger. For cyclists starting at Zweibrücken station, the route initially leads over a former railway embankment to the monastery town of Hornbach with the tomb of Saint Pirminius. Those starting from the parking lot of the Pirminiushalle in Hornbach follow Bahnhofstraße towards Hornbach Monastery. The route is very well signposted from Hornbach. In the adjacent Schwalb valley it crosses into France along a small brook. A possible rest stop with a picnic can be made at the Schweyener Mühle. More mills follow, giving the cross-border cycle path its name. The return route passes through the "Parr" (parish) in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, a heavenly quiet farming landscape around the Bickenalb valley. The Bliesgau Biosphere is characterized in its southern part by this typical gently rolling landscape and is simply a feast for the eyes!
In summary, over 10 mills line the route, bearing witness to the formerly important milling craft in this region. One of the highlights is undoubtedly the mill and saw museum at the Eschweiler Mill in Volmunster. Here you can still see how grain and wood are processed using water power.
