Directions
Pirna is an ideal starting point for this short family bike tour. There you can either take the ferry to Pirna-Copitz or take the short route over the town bridge. Then follow the road to the junction to Posta. Continue on Grundstraße followed by Arthur-Thiemann-Straße until you reach Pirna-Mockethal, which is not too steep. At the crossroads, turn right onto Wehlener Straße and just 100 meters further on, turn left into "Herrenleite" and follow the cycle path along the old railroad line and the Kratzbach stream to the Herrenleite light railway museum. A visit is particularly worthwhile on the Railway Experience Days in April or on the summer train days. After the visit, the route continues towards Dorf Wehlen, past the Kamerun quarry, where sandstone is still quarried today. Shortly before Dorf Wehlen, you leave the forest and cycle briefly along a field path to Pirnaer Straße. Here you turn left down to Dorf Wehlen. During the week, open from April to early November, you should definitely plan a visit to the "Kleine Sächsische Schweiz" miniature park. When planning your tour, please note that the duration of the tour will change if you stop at the Feldbahnmuseum and/or the miniature park. The tour then continues along Pirnaer Straße, always following it to the market in Stadt Wehlen. A detour to the newly built Wehlen Castle with the Wehlen Castle children's trail is a must at the end of the tour. You can also enjoy an ice cream or a tasty snack in one of the cafés. Then take the ferry across to the other side of the Elbe and return to Pirna on the Elbe cycle path via Obervogelgesang.

Equipment
No special equipment necessary. However, a helmet is always recommended. If necessary, a follow-me or a bike tow rope if the children run out of breath.
The route is only moderately suitable for racing bikes in parts due to rough cobblestones shortly after Herrenleite; you may have to push briefly. Trekking, gravel and city bikes as well as MTBs should have no problems on the route.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Pack sufficient provisions and drinks. There are plenty of rest stops, cafés and restaurants in Stadt Wehlen or at the start and finish point in Pirna. During the week, it is worth visiting the "Little Saxon Switzerland" miniature park. The Herrenleite light railway museum is usually open at weekends.
Safety guidelines
The bike tour is recommended for families with children aged 6 and over who can ride quite safely, have stamina and can also follow well on roads. However, most of the roads are not very busy, so the risk is low. The descent from Dorf Wehlen to Stadt Wehlen can be fast, so please watch out for children riding with you.
