The Iron Curtain Trail is part of a Europe-wide route from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea. The total length is around 7,650 km, the section along the border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein is 160 km long.
From the Baltic Sea to the Elbe, it always leads along the evidence of the Cold War through unspoilt landscapes with magnificent views, along glistening bathing lakes, rolling hills and deep forests, sometimes on the Mecklenburg side, sometimes on the Lauenburg side. The route follows the course of the former Iron Curtain, the border between East and West and the Warsaw Pact states and NATO. The fall of the Wall in 1989 also marked the fall of the Iron Curtain.
