Understanding the infinite dimensions of the cosmos on the Sohland planet route.

Many people are fascinated by the seemingly infinite expanses of the universe. Often the numerical values used to explain even our solar system alone overwhelm us.

The Sohland planet route is intended to make the dimensions of the cosmos a little more comprehensible by presenting the planets in order of their distance from the sun using a spatial model at a scale of 1:1.4 billion.

The starting point is the relief of the solar system located directly beside the observatory. From here, the path leads to display panels presenting the individual planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in easily understandable texts – also in Czech.

The panels provide not only the dimensions of the planets but also the physical conditions encountered there.

The route not only contributes to expanding one's own knowledge but also offers wonderful views of the town and the lovely landscape surrounding Sohland.

The return path can be taken back on the planet route or through the silence of the forest along the nature trail "On the trail of the red wood ant." This is also described in this system. Just this much: an entry point is reached where the Baudenweg path is walked downhill, followed on the right and shortly after continuously again on the left along Hainspacher Straße. At the pedestrian border crossing, the mentioned path can be followed by turning left.

Directions

The planet route begins at the Sohland observatory with a spatial model of our solar system. Along the path, this is presented on small panels in the order of the planets' distance from the sun.

Heading west, Schluckenauer Straße is crossed, and almost straight ahead the Alten Schmiedeweg is entered. This is followed to the end, then at the main street, turn slightly right and after a few meters turn left again, gaining a few altitude meters, and walking left follow the Alten Dorfstraße. When this joins Hainspacher Straße, the hiker walks left slightly downhill and keeps right onto Bergweg, which lives up to its name climbing steeply uphill and reaching Hainspacher Straße again. This is followed left until Baudenweg is reached. Then one last steep section goes right up to the Prinz-Friedrich-August Tower, where the last, the smallest planet is explained.

The indicated time of 1.5 hours is pure walking time.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A visit to the Sohland observatory with its 2 domes can be combined. Please contact the public and school observatory "Bruno-H. Bürger" Sohland e. V. in advance.

The unnamed hill, popularly known as "Sternwartenberg" (335 m above sea level), has housed the Sohland observatory since the 1960s. Due to the almost lightless environment where the night sky shows its full splendor, astronomy enthusiasts committed themselves to building a lecture hall, club rooms, and now two domes at exactly this location. Please make an appointment for a visit.

Lectures, guided tours, and sky observations through powerful telescopes belong to the observatory club:

- Public sky observations depending on the season and clear skies, Thursdays from about 8:00 PM

- Guided tours and lectures

- Slide shows on astronomical topics

- Major events on current astronomical occurrences

In front of the observatory, an interesting sculpture depicting our solar system marks the start of the planet route, which meanders about 4.2 km uphill through the village and can also be experienced with guided tours.
