The hiking trail “On the Trail of the Red Wood Ant” begins shortly before the car border crossing Sohland/Sluknov (CR) and runs directly along the border of both countries to the tourist border crossing Steinigtwolmsdorf/Lobendava. It always gently winds uphill and lets you experience the mountain region in all its fascination and silence. The trail offers not only a pure hiking experience over 12.5 km but also a variety of opportunities for educational excursions, nature observations, and thus relaxation. A variety of exhibits on forest protection, botany, and geology await the hiking enthusiast.
This border hiking trail is a cooperative work of Czech and German participants and is also remarkable for the bilingualism of the exhibits.
Nine rest huts along the trail with location-appropriate names (Pascher Hut, Alpine Hut, or Customs Office Hut) allow for breaks and picnics from your backpack.
The hike can be retraced the same way back, but there is also the option to return via the municipality of Steinigtwolmsdorf or the villages Wehrsdorf or Sohland to the starting point.
In any case, it is worth lacing up your hiking boots here, and stopping by one of the good and reasonably priced inns in the towns provides an appropriate refreshment after an eventful hike.

Directions
The border hiking trail On the Trail of the Red Wood Ant begins in Sohland at Schluckenauer Straße, shortly before the car border crossing to neighboring Czechia. Here there is a hiking parking lot. The signposting is clear and continually leads gently uphill in a westerly direction. Not only signs mark the way; nature enthusiasts will find a variety of display boards with lots of fascinating information in the forest and countryside. The southernmost point of the Bautzen district marks the outermost southern tip reached.
At the pedestrian border crossing there are several variants. The same path can be walked back, an option that allows new views of the landscape again.
If you have planned a circular hike and only want to stay in the Sohland area, you leave the border hiking trail here and follow Hainspacher Straße to the right. The street, which bends right in the Neudorf area, is followed to the bus turning area, which is recognizable as such on the right side of the street. Here you turn right into the hiking trail marked by Yellow Dot and Green Stripe. Magnificent views of the gentle hill chains reward the active hiker. When the Yellow Dot trail turns off, continue uphill to the right and follow this marking until the last part of the already familiar border hiking trail is reached again. Now it goes comfortably back to the starting point.
However, if you are not yet done at the pedestrian crossing, simply continue On the Trail of the Red Wood Ant to Steinigtwolmsdorf, where another pedestrian crossing is reached. Follow the Green Stripe marking into the town center of Steinigtwolmsdorf, where you can also take bus line 736 to Sohland Town Hall. From here, go slightly downhill on Bahnhofstraße, turn left over the market and then left again into Schluckenauer Straße. A sidewalk along the street safely leads back to the starting point.
