The hiking route is called the "Saxon Trail" because the Saxons under Widukind traveled back and forth along these routes on their campaigns against the Franconian Charles as an invader of the Westphalian land. The Saxon Trail is intended to keep alive the historical memory of the events of that time. At the same time, the history of the county of Ravensberg is to be remembered, as the start and end points of this hiking trail are two Ravensberg castles.
The 45 km long "Sachsenweg" connects Ravensberg Castle - the ancestral castle of the counts from the family of the same name - with the castle ruins on the Limberg in the Wiehengebirge. The route is both challenging and attractive. The route is as follows: Ravensburg, Borgholzhausen, Haus Brincke, Königsbrück Castle, Riemsloh, Elsetal, Haus Kilver, Rödinghausen with Nonnenstein to the Limberg castle ruins. An access route from Preußisch Oldendorf to Limberg is also marked with an "S".
