This signposted circular route through the town of Bünde and the surrounding countryside is a perfect tour for all cyclists interested in tobacco. This circular route is very flat and therefore also suitable for families with children, inexperienced cyclists and pensioners.

The Tobacco Cycle Route is the second tour designed by the cycle-friendly town of Bünde alongside the Farmers' Baths Cycle Route. This somewhat shorter route focuses on the development of the town of Bünde into a center of the German tobacco and cigar industry at the end of the 19th century. Along the route, there are a number of reminders of this economic heyday of the town, as well as some factories that are still in production today. Due to the subject matter, the circular route does not lead into very rural areas like the Bauernbad cycle route, but instead describes a rather narrow arc around the city center via Holsen, Ennigloh and Dünne.

The start and finish point of the Tobacco Cycle Route is the train station in Bünde, making it easy to get here by train. Bikes can also be hired from the cycle station at the train station. The route first leads across the Else river into the center of Bünde and circles the town center with its pedestrian zone and the museum island. Here you can already see the old tobacco warehouse, the monument to the cigar pioneers Steinmeister and Wellensiek, their homes, the August Schuster and Arnold Andre cigar factories and the German Tobacco and Cigar Museum. The route now runs along the new Else river out of the town center and leads past the Nienburg watermill via Werfen to Ahle. There you will find an old cottage where cigars used to be made at home.

South of Ahle, you can take a short detour to the Hücker Moor for a break. Here, a beer garden and boat hire shop invite you to linger. The Tobacco Cycle Route continues north to Holsen, where the former Gustav Beinke cigar factory is located. The northern section of the tour begins at Holsen, with a few small climbs and descents, but these are easily manageable with some basic fitness. Passing the birthplace of Tönnies Wellensiek, the route finally reaches the Dünne district of Bünde, where the company buildings of the Villiger Söhne cigar company are located. From Dünne, the route is now quite straightforward and downhill into the Gewinghauser Bachtal valley and back to the center of Bünde. Before returning to the starting point, the tour leads through the so-called Türkenkostsiedlung and past the Gerhardt & Dustmann cigar factory.

Despite its more urban character, the circular route runs almost exclusively along asphalted side roads with very little traffic. The relief is not as pronounced as on the Bauernbad cycle route, making the route suitable for less experienced cyclists. The scenic surroundings of this route are certainly attractive, but the focus is on tobacco, so the route is based on the cigar factories as destination points.

Directions

From Bünde railroad station, the route heads south across the Else. At the Laurentiuskirche church, the route turns left and runs past the Steinmeisterpark and the villas of the Steinmeister and Wellensiek families. The route continues past the cigar factories in Blumenstraße and Moltkestraße to the German Tobacco and Cigar Museum on Fünfhausenstraße. Leaving the town center of Bünde via the district of Hunnebrock, the route leads via Nienburg an der Else and the Nienburger Mühle mill through Werfen to the Hücker Moor. From there, the route continues north through Ahle and in a wide arc around Holsen towards the eastern Bünde district of Ennigloh. In Ennigloh, the route turns north again, where the route heads east again at Muckum, then describes a large curve in Dünne, passing the "Villiger Söhne" cigar factory. The route then continues in a southerly direction towards the town center of Bünde. Shortly before the end of the tour, the route stops at the "Gerhardt & Dunstmann" cigar factory, which is still well preserved and provides an insight into the past. The tour then returns to the starting point at Bünde railroad station.
