If you missed the blossom, no problem. The Freeden is also an experience at any other time of year.
The Freeden is in bloom!
A unique experience for young and old! "The Freeden is in bloom" is the motto every year in April, when a purple and white carpet of flowers begins to spread across the slopes of the mountain range near Bad Iburg. It is the 'Hollow Larkspur', which bathes the forest floor in a blaze of color within a few days in spring, which is unique in this form in the entire region.
The Larkspur is one of the early bloomers, which take advantage of the first warmth of the year and already let the main part of their vegetation cycle run its course before the leaves sprout from the trees. Leaves and flowers are long gone by the time the beech trees spread their foliage at the beginning of May and only let a little light through to the ground. In addition to the larkspur, a whole range of other early bloomers such as wild garlic, bindweed and wood anemone can be discovered on the Freeden. They all have one thing in common: their preference for calcareous soils.
The Freed-O-Meter
For all those who don't want to miss the extraordinary sea of flowers, the TERRA.vita offers our little animation - the so-called Freed-O-Meter - for the spring awakening on the website www.geopark-terravita.de under the TERRA.saison heading. The current status of the larkspur blossom can be followed here - from the first delicate buds to the full bloom to the fading. The TERRA.track Freedenblüte
This TERRA.track was created as part of a funding project at the terra.Vita Nature and Geopark and is published in the TEUTO_Navigator in cooperation with the nature park as a tour tip for the Hermannshöhen.
