The Vogtland Knollensteig runs between Oelsnitz, Adorf, and Schöneck. On our hike, we are accompanied by the Vogtland Knolle as the potato man.

There are six shelters and additional benches for resting.

The Hundsgrün stop, which is regularly reached by the Vogtlandbahn, is a good starting point for the hike. A potato house serves as a monument to the origin of potato cultivation around 375 years ago.

In Unterwürsnitz, hikers have the opportunity to learn much more about potatoes. About 200 potato varieties are grown at the Erlebnis-Ferienhof Wilfert and prepared into various delicacies. In addition, potato tastings are available upon request.

Directions

Train - Hundsgrün stop - Elster valley - old Marieneyer street - potato house - Unterwürsnitz - church path Tirschendorf - Willitzgrün - agricultural cooperative Tirschendorf e. G. - Marieney - Würschnitzbach valley - Hundsgrün.

Our hike begins at the Hundsgrün train station, the path leads us along the Elster valley in the forest towards Unterwürsnitz.

We cross the Würschnitz stream and arrive at the potato house. It is known from tradition that the hiking journeyman Kummerlöw cultivated the first potatoes in Vogtland here. Since people were very superstitious at that time, they only used the blossom as a flower. Everything that grew underground was considered devilish and was forbidden to eat under any circumstances.

Now we begin the ascent into the village of Unterwürsnitz, where the hiker now has the opportunity to learn much more about the potato at Erlebnis Ferienhof Wilfert. The holiday farm cultivates about 200 potato varieties (original potatoes, old and own varieties), which are processed in the restaurant. During a potato tasting, you can enjoy the delicate potatoes or watch the show planting and enjoy the remaining blossom splendor.

We continue towards the church; it is worth taking a detour for a visit, with a carved wooden altar and organ by Trampeli from 1712 with 11 registers and 692 pipes, the smallest oldest bell from 1506. We leave the village of Unterwürsnitz and hike towards Tirschendorf.

Just before entering the forest, we enjoy the magnificent view over southern Vogtland towards Bavaria. The hike leads us through the forest over the Tirschenbach into the village of Tirschendorf, where we have the opportunity to take a detour into the agricultural cooperative and admire the variety of modern technology. It continues over meadows and forests towards the village of Marieney, the birthplace of Julius Mosen, known for his homeland songs. A detour to the museum is always worthwhile.

Now we pass through the village to one of the most beautifully situated valleys of Vogtland, the Würschnitzbach valley back to Unterwürsnitz. We experience unspoiled nature; if we are very quiet and still, we can hear the call of the kingfisher or notice the cuckoo’s cry. If we are very lucky, we see two black storks flying above us. Returning to the potato house, the route goes back to the starting point at the Hundsgrün train station.
