Directions

The tour starts at Postplatz, where the so called "Muschelminna" wears her lighted winter robe. Only a few steps away you can see the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) which is a three-naved Gothic hall church. Keep on walking towards Demianiplatz and Platz des 17. Juni, where the Kaisertrutz is located. It is part of the Görlitz Museum of History and Culture. Once the city of Görlitz had 32 fortifications, four of them are still existing today such as the Kaisertrutz. Move a bit backwards and turn into the street Am Museum, now walk directly towards the Dicke Turm, which is also known as Frauenturm. It is called Dicker Turm because its walls are 5.34 metres thick at the bottom! The tower is 46 metres high and can be visited from mid-March to December. The Elisabethplatz (Elisabethstraße) is located behind the Dicke Turm. It is a divided street with a large part in the centre part. The upper part of this centre part is used for farmer's markets.

Walk through the old town and via the Neißstraße to the Old Town Bridge (Altstadtbrücke). There has been a bridge here since the year 1298. Originally it was a wooden bridge. Due to a lot of traffic, fire, floods and war it had to be renewed from time to time. The Old Town Bridge you can see now was was officially inaugurated in 2004.

Stroll towards the Nikolaivorstadt which is the oldest district of Görlitz. The St. Nicholas‘ Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in town and the St. Nicholas‘ Church are located here. Furthermore it is possible to visit the Holy Sepulchre here.

Now go back to the Obermarkt where the Trinity Church (Dreifaltigkeitskirche) and the Görlitz-Information are located. Once a year a skating rink is set up here in the centre of the Obermarkt. Then it is possible to skate from the end of November to mid-January in the historical cityscape of Görlitz.

The tour ends at the Untermarkt and the tower of the town hall. Here a variety of restaurants will invite you to warm up.
