And action! The Holy Trinity Church opposite provided the backdrop for a monastery in the movie "Grand Budapest Hotel". Turn your gaze to the right onto the Obermarkt. Imagine the square without cars. Perfect for a driving scene in "The Monuments Men", which was filmed here.

To get to the next filming location, walk across Obermarkt in the direction of Reichenbacher Turm, cross Obermarkt and turn left into Steinstraße. On the left is the former Totschek department store, the exterior and interior of which was used as a motif for the series "Das Haus der Träume" and the film "Es war einmal in Deutschland".
Straight ahead, you can see the Art Nouveau department store, which, after its history as a department store, has already made several glamorous appearances in films. In 2013, Wes Anderson created his "Grand Budapest Hotel" in the building. Almost a decade later, it was brought to life as the "Jonass Department Store" in the series "The House of Dreams". For "The School of Magical Beasts 3", the old department store was transformed into a natural history museum in which the giant skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex was set up. You can now marvel at it in the Kleinwelka dinosaur park.
To the left and right of the main entrance, you will find movie windows decorated with original props. The furniture comes from the filming of "The House of Dreams" and was built especially for it. The contents of the display case on the left and the clothes in the wardrobe on the right are on loan from the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz, which is located just a few steps away from the department store. Please note that a visit to the department store is currently only possible as part of a guided tour. Friederike Becht strolled along the shop windows under the department store arcades as "Käthe Kruse" for the film of the same name. In the film "The Reader", Kate Winslet, in the role of conductor Hanna Schmitz, took the streetcar past the department store. She won her first Oscar for her role. She may also have been the most prominent customer of the Leiser shoe store to date, which you pass on the way straight ahead to Postplatz.

If you look to the left, you will see the entrance to a parking garage. This is where David Hasselhoff used to park during his shoot for "Ze Network".

Postplatz is adorned by the Muschelminna fountain. Even though the fountain figure looks glamorous, she has never had a leading role in a movie. Pass the historic post office building to reach Jakobstraße. The crew of "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde" not only found a suitable location at Jakobstraße 5 near the "Goldenes Tor", but also took up residence there. Another set was set up on the corner of Wilhelmsplatz and Hospitalstraße. Görlitz doubled Berlin and Dresden in the film.
The film production set up Michael Berg's family apartment in house no. 5a for the film "The Reader". Today it houses offices and various rooms can be rented. The film apartment of Hanna Schmitz, played by Kate Winslet, was located at Landeskronstraße 18. Follow Jakobstraße to Bahnhofstraße. You will see the Filmpalast Görlitz on the left in the corner. Once built as a hotel, the building was rebuilt several times. It has been used as a cinema since 1920. Quentin Tarantino was so impressed by the quarter-round façade during his visit to Görlitz that he used it as a model for his movie theater in the film "Inglourious Basterds".

You now have two options for continuing your tour:
1) From the Filmpalast, continue left along Bahnhofstraße until you reach Augustastraße. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck shot scenes for his Oscar®-nominated film "Werk ohne Autor" here and in Holteistraße. Turn right into Emmerichstraße. House no. 41 was the home of Anna and Otto Quangel, played by Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson, in the film "Every man for himself". An earlier film adaptation of the Fallada novel was also shot in Görlitz. Other scenes for the TV two-parter "The Tower" and the film comedy "Once Upon a Time in Germany" were also shot in the area.

Follow the road straight ahead until you reach Dr.-Kahlbaum-Allee. A short detour to the right and you are in front of the Freisebad. Founded in 1887, it was in use until 1996. It was briefly revived as a "bath" for the film "Grand Budapest Hotel". The Tivoli opposite, which houses a bowling alley, was converted into a sports bar for some "Wolfsland" parts.

If you follow the Oder-Neisse cycle path a little further to the right, the impressive Neisse Viaduct rises up in front of you. A scene for "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde" was filmed here, which is actually set in Dresden, the hometown of the novelist Erich Kästner.

If you continue along the cycle path, you will come to the Landskron brewery on the left, where beer has been brewed since 1869. However, the brewery also became famous as a film location, for example as the port of New York in the remake of the classic "Around the World in 80 Days" with Jackie Chan or as a chocolate factory in the Swiss production "Papa Moll or The Abduction of the Flying Dog". It's worth making a detour to take a break in the visitor center for refreshments or to take part in a guided tour.

You can return to the Filmpalast via Sattigstraße through the Jakobstunnel. You can make your way back via Jakobstraße or continue your walk towards the train station as described under 2).

2) Take a short detour to the right to Görlitz station, which was given an imposing Art Nouveau station building in 1917. It is worth taking a look inside the station concourse. Several dramatic and emotional welcome and farewell scenes were filmed on the platforms, including for "The Book Thief","The Silent Classroom" and the Indonesian film "Habibie and Ainun".

From the station, you can follow the streetcar tracks straight ahead along Berliner Straße. The entrance area on the right, the former "Vier Jahreszeiten" hotel, was used as a filming location for the TV movie "Nicht mir mir, Liebling". The films "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde" and "Der Hauptmann" were also shot in the upper part of Berliner Straße. There is a pedestrian crossing approximately in the middle of Berliner Straße. A few steps to the right on Hospitalstraße, in front of the Kings Pub, was the filming location for "Ze Network".
From the pedestrian lights, continue left on Hospitalstraße to Krölstraße, cross the traffic lights and then turn left to Lutherplatz. Once you have reached the end of the square, keep left on Landeskronstraße until you reach Leipziger Straße or Leipziger Platz. And you are already in the middle of a film set from "Jeder stirbt für sich allein", which stretches straight ahead to Hilgerstraße. On the right on Bautzener Straße is the entrance to the former yeast factory, which provided the backdrop for a "Wolfsland" thriller, among others. Walk straight ahead until you reach the Teichstraße/Demianiplatz junction. You will see the theater on your right. David Hasselhoff and Henry Hübchen stood on the boards that mean the world for the spy thriller "Ze Network".
Via Demianiplatz, you return to Obermarkt and the Görlitz Information Center, the starting point of your tour.

Even more extensive is the tour from filming location to filming location, which is offered to you via the SmartGuide app. It takes you around 45 km to 36 stations throughout the city and beyond. You don't have to complete the route in one day, completely or exclusively on foot. You decide the pace and where you start and finish. Download the app and off you go! Your tour can easily be combined with a bike tour, which you can extend to the south of the city to Lake Berzdorf and the Miejski Dom Kultury in Zgorzelec. You can hire bikes at the Görlitz Information Office or from other providers.
