Café im Clüverhaus

This building preserves a piece of the former farming village of Achim. The former farmhouse is one of 14 “Bauhöfe”—that is, large farms—most of which remained in operation well into the 20th century. Historically, these Bauhöfe are likely among the oldest settlements in the village and were originally located near the church.

The current Clüver House, a typical Lower Saxon two-post half-timbered farmhouse, was built in 1824, according to the inscription above the “Grootdöör.”

The previous building was destroyed by fire in 1823. The fire also claimed the life of the three-year-old daughter, Margarethe, of the builder Franz Clüver. The farmstead was owned by the Clüver family for several centuries.

Today, the building houses a café operated by the Waldheim Workshops. The Waldheim Workshops are a nonprofit organization for people with disabilities.

Together with the neighboring Meislahn farmstead on Große Kirchenstraße, the Clüverhaus forms a historic ensemble. After the restoration of the old half-timbered barn, the partitions were reinstalled using wickerwork. The ensemble also includes the church and the Bischoff farmstead, now known as Scherf Nachfolger. This is where Achim’s farming district, the “old village of Achim,” is located.
