Döbelner Pferdebahn and German Horse Tram Museum
The old Döbeln horse-drawn streetcar was in operation from 1892 to 1926 on a 2.5 km route from the main railway station to the city center as a means of public transport. Since June 2007, visitors have been able to experience the nostalgic ride of the past on the faithfully restored Döbeln horse-drawn streetcar, the only one of its kind in Germany, on an approx. 1 km long track in Döbeln city center.
The horse-drawn streetcar is the origin of all modern means of local transport. At the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century, there were horse-drawn streetcars in over 90 cities in Germany and as many as 1,700 worldwide. Until now, however, they have not been given complex museum recognition. In some streetcar museums, the subject of horse-drawn streetcars is dealt with, but usually only marginally and limited to local circumstances. In Döbeln, a museum has been set up in which photographic material and exhibits are shown solely on the subject of horse-drawn streetcars. The eventful and sometimes curious history of the horse-drawn streetcar in Döbeln, Germany and the world is presented on 50 display boards.
