Gedenkstätte "Wunder von Lengede" - Schacht Mathilde

Memorial
A redesigned museum opened in Lengede to mark the 60th anniversary of the mining accident on October 24, 2023.
Lengede gained worldwide fame in the fall of 1963 due to the mining accident . On October 24, 129 miners in the ''Mathilde'' shaft were surprised by 500,000 cubic meters of water when an above-ground mining sewage pond (sewage pond 12) burst. 86 miners saved themselves on the same day. Rescue did not appear possible for the remaining 43. After eight days, three more miners were rescued. The ''miracle of Lengede'' refers to the discovery of miners still alive at a depth of 60 meters on 3 November. The eleven men held out underground for another four days before they were rescued with a Dahlbusch bomb.

Our tip: Find out more about iron ore and immerse yourself in the history of mining around Lengede. In the former administration building of the mine in Lengede - Broistedt, the entire history of mining from 1824 to 1977 is on display. Afterwards, you can visit the memorial site of the mining accident.
