The ancient church in Hassel is located directly on the Geestrand. The location is well chosen: Even the oldest reports know nothing of the church ever having suffered from the frequent Weser floods. Inside there are some interesting gravestones, such as one depicting how a bride was struck by a blow and died at the moment of marriage in front of the altar. The pulpit is painted in the peasant baroque style.
With a history of around 1000 years, Hassel Church is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Syke-Hoya church district. The first church is said to have existed around 929. Today we find a two-bay nave with a length of 27 meters and a width of eight meters on a profiled base with a recessed western choir bay from the 12th century; the eastern bay was probably added at the end of the 13th century (Dehio). The building is made of bricks and partly of fieldstones. The roof is covered with tiles.
The square tower is 20 meters high and has a pyramid-shaped spire. The steel bell dates from 1951. The original bell was melted down during the Second World War.
