Church
From wooden beginnings to a majestic church: the Mauritius Church in Hittfeld
Today's Mauritius Church in Hittfeld, an impressive building from the 12th century, rises majestically on the site where two predecessor churches probably once stood. The oldest of these churches was undoubtedly a wooden baptistery built in the era of Charlemagne. The church is picturesquely enthroned on a hill, which probably once housed an ancient place of worship. It bears the name of the Roman officer Mauritius, who courageously refused to take part in the persecution of Christians and thus became a martyr himself.
