Around the Theikenmeer nature reserve in Werlte

On the Theikenmeer circuit, nature enthusiasts can discover the flora and fauna along the circular hiking trail with nine information stations. The Bernhard Grzimek Tower, named after the first patron of the nature reserve, and various observation points provide very special insights and reveal the great importance of the area. Alternatively, the Crane Trail leads from the nature park station directly to the heart of the area and its namesake.

The Theikenmeer nature reserve

The "Theikenmeer" with the adjacent "Moorwiesen am Theikenmeer" is an important nature reserve with a total area of 290 hectares and is located between the municipalities of Werlte and Sögel. Visitors can get a good overview of the entire area from the Bernhard Grzimek Tower. On the way to the tower, hikers will discover a geological highlight along the way - the erratic boulder from Sweden, which was transported by glaciers and found its place here.

The actual Theikenmeer, with a water surface area of around 20 hectares, is the remnant of a so-called Schlatt, which formed after the last glacial period from the run-off water of the raised bog and the adjacent Geestkante to the south. With its open water areas and the surrounding wet meadows and raised bogs, the area is of particular importance for nature conservation and environmental protection. The Theikenmeer provides a habitat for numerous water birds such as greylag, Canada and Egyptian geese as well as herons and teals. The birdwatching hut is popular with visitors as it gives them a good overview of the heart of the nature reserve.

From fall to spring, whooper swans, bean geese and white-fronted geese can be observed on the water as winter guests. On the raised bog areas, some of which have been rewetted to bind climate-damaging carbon, adders, raised bog dragonflies and moor frogs still find a valuable habitat. The Wehmer Dose viewing platform offers unique views of the Theikenmeer and the raised bogs.

And the moor meadows on the Theikenmeer are natural breeding grounds for lapwings, snipes and cranes. The view from the Moorwiesen observation hill is also fascinating.

Tip: The nature reserve is looked after and maintained by NABU Werlte/Sögel. Nature tours can be booked there or via the Hümmling Nature Park can be booked.
