The Alte Waage building, which was built in 1555 under Mayor Hieronymus Lotter, was originally used to collect taxes.
The weighing office was located on the first floor, the aldermen's drinking room on the first floor and the council wine tavern in the cellar. From 1661 to 1712, the Leipzig post office was located in the building. After the building was completely destroyed in an air raid in 1963/64, only the façade was reconstructed and the side facing Katharinenstraße was given a modern design. At the beginning of 1965, the building was used by the GDR travel agency and was acquired by the Alte Leipziger insurance company in 1994. There is currently a branch of a fast food chain on the first floor of the building.
