Entertainment in four venues
The Oldenburg State Theatre with its large dome and antique portico has characterised the cityscape of Oldenburg since 1893. Originally built in the Italian Renaissance style, the theatre was destroyed by fire in 1891 and rebuilt in the neo-baroque style. The most recent refurbishment took place in 2010, so that today the Great House impresses with modern stage technology under restored stucco and paintings.
Varied programme
Today, the Great House presents lavishly staged operas, ballets and concerts. The neighbouring Kleines Haus is home to plays - with the Niederdeutsches Schauspiel also plays in Low German. In the Spielraum, the Young State Theatre is at the centre of the action. The most recent addition is the "Exhalle" at Pferdemarkt - an unusual outdoor venue for modern theatre forms. Many productions take a stand on socio-political events.
