Schwarzkreidegrube Vehrte

Geotope
The claystones in the former quarry are 170 million years old.
They are deposits of a poorly aerated, oxygen-poor shallow sea. Sludge formed on the sea floor from clay particles and the remains of dead organisms. In the course of the earth's history, oil-like compounds (bitumina), the "black chalk", were formed from this.

Information boards provide information about the formation processes and geological effects.
