Church
St Mary’s Church is the dominant historical building in the Untermhaus part of the city, directly below what was formerly Osterstein Castle on the banks of the White Elster river.
The church dates back to a medieval chapel built in about 1200, which was presumably donated by the monastery in Mildenfurth. The oldest parts of the building – the tower, chancel and sections of the nave – were built of Falka sandstone in Late Gothic style. The preserved winged altar dating from the 15th century is an art history treasure – a masterpiece of High Gothic art. It was a gift from two Gera merchant families and was probably made near the Franciscan monastery in Saalfeld.
