St. Nicolai - Ev.-luth. Kirchengemeinde Nordleda

St. Nicolai Church is a fieldstone church built on a cemetery mound. A pastor in this parish was first mentioned in a document in 1312. The church was built around 1200 and is dedicated to St. Nicholas. Its steeple is said to have been 230 feet tall (approx. 70 meters) when it was first built and even served as a navigational marker for ships on the Elbe, as it was even taller than the steeples in Otterndorf and Altenbruch. Accidents and the forces of nature caused it to lose several meters of its former height, and today it stands at an estimated 30 meters.

The tower clock is mechanical and must be wound by hand every three days. The larger of the two bells in use today dates from 1964 and weighs nearly 22 centner. It was cast at the Wilhelmshütte foundry near Bockenem in the Harz Mountains.
