How would you like to arrive?
Chalk mining for cement production began in Hemmoor in 1862.
After the open-cast mine was shut down and the groundwater pumps switched off in 1976, the resulting chalk pit filled up with crystal-clear spring water.
The chalk lake is a diving paradise, up to 60 meters deep, which has been awarded several times as the best diving center in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
During a dive or an exploration tour with the submarine "Eurosub" you can discover abandoned chalk mining facilities and other artifacts such as caravans, cars and an airplane. There are a total of 42 different diving objects at depths of 3-45 meters. The water temperature allows diving all year round.
At a depth of 19 meters, you will find what is probably the deepest letterbox in Germany. Divers can post their waterproof postcards here. These can be purchased at the diving center. The "underwater mail" is emptied weekly by a diver and taken to the post office.
The chalk lake is also suitable for divers with disabilities. Handicap diving is available on request.
There is a campsite, vacation apartments and Scandinavian-style vacation homes on the shores of the chalk lake.
