Since the 15th century, Günzburg's marketplace has been the economic heart of the city, experiencing significant growth due to the postal route connecting Vienna and Paris, which passed through Günzburg in 1760, under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa. The increased traffic boosted toll revenues and raised the demand for inns and overnight accommodations.
In 1796, the marketplace had 19 taverns, 14 of which operated their own breweries. Colorful coat-of-arms on the house facades today remind visitors of this era and point to the former and some still-existing inns and breweries – a piece of living history that continues to shape Günzburg’s hospitality today.
