Directions

The hiking tour on the E3 through Saxon Switzerland starts in Geising in the eastern Ore Mountains. We follow the Engen Gasse towards Lauenstein. We soon keep to the right and follow the Altenberger Weg. We reach the small town of Lauenstein with its Renaissance castle. The path leads downhill along Schloßstraße and crosses the Müglitz. Once on the other bank, we initially keep left, then soon turn right to reach the crossroads to Liebenau. From there, we continue briefly on the main road until we reach the Harteweg junction and turn left. We follow the signs towards Bad Gottleuba and Augustusberg. We continue past the quarter milestone and cross under the A17 highway at the Nasenbachtal bridge.

After the bridge, we come across the Gottleuba, whose direction of flow we follow leisurely downhill into the Oelsengrund. We hike along the Gottleuba until we reach the dam of the Gottleuba reservoir. Passing the right bank of the dam, we reach the entrance to the spa town of Bad Gottleuba via the Alter Oelsener Weg, but the E3 does not lead directly through the spa town, but only touches the town and immediately turns right again, uphill to the Augustusberg. From the vantage point, there is a beautiful open view of the Gottleuba dam and the ridges of the Eastern Ore Mountains. The stage ends here with overnight accommodation in a mountain hotel.

Additional information

On this section, the E3 is identical to the EB (Eisenach-Budapest). The paths are generally marked with a blue line on a white background.

Thanks to good public transport connections in the area and a well-branched network of marked hiking trails, the route can be varied or shortened in many places.
