General informationFrom Lauenburg to Brunsbüttel you cycle along the Elbe Cycle Route through Schleswig-Holstein. Over a length of 170 km, the route lines the banks of Germany's second longest river: the Elbe. Along the banks of the Elbe you cycle past beaches, small islands and long sandbanks. Nature and culture lovers will get their money's worth here, because in addition to romantic vantage points in the countryside, attractive sights await along the way. After sections through beech forests, genteel villa districts and tranquil small towns, the route leads to the port metropolis of Hamburg.
Along the route
Visit, for example, the Elbe Shipping Museum and the Palm Lock in Lauenburg. Do you prefer a nostalgic ride on the steam locomotive Karoline? Then by all means plan a stopover in Geesthacht. The Hanseatic city of Hamburg has something to offer for every taste. During a harbour tour, a walk along the Alster, a visit to the theatre or a day at Hagenbeck's zoo, you can thoroughly enjoy the flair of the metropolis. In Wedel you will drive along the planetary nature trail and it is worth making a detour to the Ernst Barlach Museum.
Do you know the smallest ferry in Germany? In Seester you can use it to cross the Krückau (tributary of the Elbe) at weekends. Continue through Glückstadt with its historic old town until you finally reach Brunsbüttel. Here you should visit the locks at the exit of the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal and the Kiel Canal Route. With a bit of luck, one of the famous dream ships will just pass by.
