Following Schumann's Trail: A Tour through Zwickau

2. Hotel "Zur grünen Tanne"
The hotel was once a popular meeting place regularly visited by Schumann. Clara Schumann, née Wieck, also once gave a concert here. The building was destroyed during World War II. Today, the Jakob Leupold Building of the West Saxon University stands at this location.

3. "Grünhainer Kapelle" and Lyceum
It is one of the few preserved buildings of the former economic yard of the Grünhain monastery. Later, the area was used as a grammar school, which Robert Schumann also attended as a pupil. Among the significant personalities of the school was the scholar Georgius Agricola, founder of mining sciences, who worked here as a teacher and headmaster.

4. "Priesterhäuser"
The Priest Houses were built in the mid-13th century and served as official residences for employees of the Zwickau school and church system. Today, their historic walls house an exhibition space of the city history museum.

5. St. Mary's Cathedral
It is one of the most valuable late Gothic hall churches in Saxony. With its impressive architecture, it still characterizes the historic cityscape of Zwickau today.

6. Inn "Zum Großen Christoph"
The inn, which bore the name "Zur Stadt Dresden" from 1830, housed a postal station at the same time. Johann Wilhelm von Schlegel, a good friend of Robert Schumann, worked here.

7. Town Hall
Zwickau's town hall was built in 1403 and bears the Zwickau city coat of arms above the market-side main entrance. A personal connection to Robert Schumann exists through the Ruppius family: The mayor's wife was his godmother and raised him for two years of his life.

8. "Löwenapotheke" and "Herb Vault"
From 1561 until the 1990s, the Löwenapotheke was located here, regarded as one of the earliest pharmacy foundations. The Schumann family was closely friends with the then-pharmacist August Laurentius.

9. Gewandhaus
The Gewandhaus was built between 1522 and 1525 as the guild house of the clothmakers' guild. In 1823, Robert Schumann witnessed the opening of the building as a theater here.

10. Inn "Zum Goldnen Anker"
The former inn was, during Robert Schumann's youth, owned by the father of his first great love, Ida Stölzel. At the same time, it was here in 1835 that the second kiss between Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck took place.

11. Robert Schumann Monument
The monument was created by Leipzig sculptor Johannes Hartmann and was solemnly unveiled in 1901. The monument still commemorates the city's great composer today.

12. Schumann's Youth House
In 1817, the Schumann family moved into this house where Robert spent his youth. His first poems as well as early compositions were created here. The building was destroyed during World War II; however, the former site is today marked on the ground.

13. Osterstein Castle
The castle is first mentioned in a document from 1331. Between 1587 and 1590, it was rebuilt into one of the most representative Renaissance castles in Saxony.

14. Paradise Bridge, to Brückenberg, to Kellerberg
From here one looks onto the Brückenberg, a place where Robert Schumann often stayed. On the left side were formerly the Zwickau mountain cellars where beer was stored and over which small taverns partly stood. In 1847, the first Schumann Festival in honor of Clara and Robert Schumann took place here as an open-air concert.
