Following Schumann's Trail: A Tour through Zwickau

The tour leads along his childhood in Zwickau, where he was born in 1810 as the fifth child of the publishing bookseller August Schumann and his wife Christiane. His literary and musical talent was discovered early.

Along the way through the city, stations of his life are ubiquitous: from the beginnings of the talented pupil Robert Schumann to the composer who later gained international fame with piano music, songs, as well as stage, choral, orchestral, and chamber music. In 1840 he married the successful pianist and composer Clara Wieck.

Schumann is still omnipresent in Zwickau today: Around his birthday in June, the Robert Schumann Festival celebrates the musical legacy of the composer. The International Robert Schumann Competition brings together young talents from all over the world, and the Robert Schumann Prize of the city honors personalities who keep his work alive.
