The last ice age made the first changes to the landscape of the Stecknitz region. It formed hills and valleys, in which lakes and rivers formed. Two rivers – straightened and connected – formed the Stecknitz Canal (now the Elbe-Lübeck Canal), on which the Stecknitz boatmen hauled their salt barges (reconstruction in Berkenthin) in the Middle Ages.
The circular trail leads – partly along the old towpath – along streams, over bridges, through forests, and idyllic villages to sights in the region (e.g., Berkenthin Church).
