Kleinnaundorf circular route

Just a few meters beyond the village pond, the path leads along gardens to the Kaitzbach spring. After another stretch, the path passes the daycare center „WURZELZWERGE“ built in 2014. Continuing on Meßweg, turning left, you reach the first sandstone arched bridge of the Windberg Railway, which was closed in 1951 and was the first German mountain railway. It is possible to turn left towards Kleinnaundorf station. However, we go through the viaduct to Kohlenstraße, then turn left and after about 500 meters enter the Windberg area. At the sandstone wall, which was once part of a bridge for the coal branch railway, we turn left and pass the former Neuhoffnung shaft. At the next junction, keep slightly right and soon reach a park-like memorial. It commemorates the mining disaster of August 2, 1869, in which 276 miners lost their lives. Coming from the „Segen-Gottes shaft“, we cross Kohlenstraße and walk across the field. There is a beautiful view of Kleinnaundorf and the Dresden surroundings. Then continue through an arched bridge of the Windberg Railway.

Upon reaching Friedensstraße, we continue it to the left and discover a small war memorial on the right side of the street, commemorating the Kleinnaundorf citizens who died in the First World War. Continue along Steigerstraße past the listed school built in 1893 and further into the Kaitz valley. Passing a creative workshop and the most beautiful garages of Kleinnaundorf, we come to a cave. Such earth caves were often used by farmers to safely store their tools nearby their fields for the next day's work.

After a short climb, you return to the former railway track. After 800 meters, you reach the Kleinnaundorf stop. The local heritage association "G-Haus" Kleinnaundorf e.V. uses the station for many activities. Every year, the traditional soapbox race starts here. In the waiting hall, a small exhibition informs about the history of the Windberg Railway, especially the Kleinnaundorf stop, as well as about mining history and the mining disaster of August 2, 1869.

Continue straight along the embankment to Meßweg and follow it to the right towards the town center. This brings you back to the starting point of the hike.

• From Dresden via Kohlenstraße, turn left at the Hopfenblüte inn and drive to Kleinnaundorf.
• From Freital via Burgker Straße, cross Kohlenstraße and continue as above.
• From the motorway exit (A17) Dresden Südvorstadt, follow the B170 inland via Windbergstraße, Horkenstraße, and Steigerstraße to Kleinnaundorf.
