Moritzburger Ring – Around Moritzburg

The 40-kilometer tour starts at the castle parking lot across from the Moritzburg Tourist Information Office. From here, you can see Moritzburg’s most famous landmark, the Baroque castle. On the other side of Schlossallee lie the stables of the Saxon State Stud, best known for its stallion parades in the fall.

The route follows the signpost bearing the black-and-yellow town coat of arms and the inscription “Moritzburger Ring.” You’ll pass the State Stud and the Swan Pond on your way into the Friedewald. Here you’ll see the Churfürstliche Waldschänke, a historic complex featuring a restaurant and hotel. Next comes the Großteich, where a gap in the old game wall leads to the Fasanenschlösschen. You can explore the late-Baroque palace from all sides—real pheasants can be seen in the adjacent enclosure, and several beer gardens offer a chance to take a break.

The Großteich is also home to the famous Moritzburg Lighthouse, Saxony’s only historic lighthouse. It was originally built as a backdrop for festivities of the Saxon court.

Afterward, you’ll ride along beautiful forest paths through the Frauenteich Nature Reserve, where you can observe birds at a station specially set up for this purpose. After a few kilometers along the forest and the Bauernteich, the district of Steinbach awaits. Here you’ll find the traditional Mistschänke inn,

Passing through the district of Auer, you’ll reach the typical rolling landscape of small hills, stretching across gentle slopes and featuring a picturesque mix of meadows and fields. In the next district, Dippelsdorf, it’s worth making a detour tothe “Rotes Haus”(Red House), the home of the Brücke artists, who made their mark on Expressionist painting here. Today, the house is also used as a nature station by NABU.

Further along the tour, you briefly cross the romantic Lößnitzgrund valley before heading uphill to the highlands, where the villages of Reichenberg and Boxdorf await. The route then heads north back to Moritzburg, where the Moritzburger Rad'l Eck at the edge of the forest invites you to stop for a break from April through October.
