A North German metropolis – surrounded by two low mountain ranges. A large city with 158,000 inhabitants – right in the middle of the Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita. From contrasts like these, an appealing urban experience arises, which can be wonderfully enjoyed on a compact cycling round route on the Osnabrück Round Tour.
Along the way, you will encounter the rivers Hase, Nette, and Düte, on whose banks the seamless transition between city and nature park can be experienced. On the branch canal, which connects Osnabrück to the Mittelland Canal, has always been one of the city’s economic centers. In the “Museum of Industrial Culture,” historic machines recall bygone times and add a touch of nostalgia mixed with the scent of hard work.
But there is more: noble residences and old mills, a zoo and the Rubbenbruch Lake, strawberry fields and forests, even megalithic graves can be found in Osnabrück and its immediate surroundings. In short: the “Osnabrück Round Tour” offers a foretaste of what is yet to come. Of a diverse region, its people, and its sights. But before you set off, a lengthy stroll through the historic old town with its medieval stone buildings and the gothic stepped gables of proud civic houses is worthwhile.
On the steps of the town hall, which is more than 500 years old, the Peace of Westphalia was proclaimed in 1648. A past that still obliges today: Erich Maria Remarque, the most influential pacifist writer of the 20th century, is a son of the city. The peace center named after him commemorates the life and work of the internationally renowned author and explores the major theme of “war and peace” in all its facets in changing special exhibitions.
