A pleasant and short bike route along the Elbe in Bad Schandau and its districts Krippen and Schmilka.

The route starts at the market square in Bad Schandau. It goes down to the Elbe and we first cycle downstream to the city bridge. From there you have a great panoramic view over the Elbe, the town and the surrounding rocks. In the other direction, we see the Lilienstein, but we turn towards the National Park Station. We roll down in loops to the Elbe Cycle Route. On the other side of the Elbe, the spa town of Bad Schandau stretches out and in the morning light, the historic passenger lift winks. On the left bank of the Elbe, we follow the cycle path to Krippen, where we catch exciting perspectives with views of the Schrammsteine. In general, you feel comfortable here between the rocks, it rolls nicely and the route is pleasantly flat. At the ferry landing in Schmilka-Hirschmühle, the ferry is already waiting for us and brings us safely to the other shore. The change in perspective while gliding over the water and admiring the rocks around us is truly spectacular.

Arriving in Schmilka, we head straight to the bakery. It opens early in the morning, and we can take some treats directly from the bakery. Next door in the romantic Mill Yard, the mill wheel clatters as we enjoy a little soup for strength. The great thing: everything here is organic. Along with a home-brewed beer - tastes great! A bottle for the holiday evening also fits in the pannier bag.

If you like, you can go for a small hike in the national park directly from here or, like us, cycle leisurely back to Bad Schandau. Passing the half-timbered houses of the Bad Schandau district Postelwitz and shipyards, we return to the spa town center. How will we spend the rest of the day...? Spa? Another short hike? Botanical garden?

Safety guidelines

The route is almost car-free. On the left, southern side of the Elbe, the Elbe Cycle Route is partly used by residents as an access road. Be careful near the Ziegelscheune in Krippen: here you cycle between a restaurant and a beer garden. So either slow down or stop and take a break.
