Saarschleifen Classic Round

The route starts at the Stadtpark in Merzig. From there, it goes over the Hilbringer Bridge past the Stadthalle and the Stadtpark to the Saar towards Mettlach. Along the Saar, the round leads past Besseringen. Beyond Besseringen, it heads towards the Saarschleifen. Here, a short detour to the St. Gangolf church and the eponymous estate is worthwhile. Delicious specialties from St. Gangolf: The farm shop offers seasonal game meat from deer and wild boar, wild salami, and fine brandies from its own production.

The route continues through the landmark of Saarland, the Saarschleife. Past forests and steep slopes, you reach the ceramics community of Mettlach. Here, the ride can be interrupted for a visit to the ceramic experience worlds and the outlet of Villeroy & Boch. But also the Holy Lutwinus' tomb church and the Old Abbey with the old tower and park are worth seeing. The Mettlach Abbey brewery invites you to stop for refreshments. Excursion boats are available on the Saar shore for round trips, and there are some dining options in the pedestrian zone.

In Mettlach, the route goes back over the weir to the Saarschleife. This time on the opposite side of the loop, you cross the impressive river landscape. Right in the loop, the wine bar of the Saarschleifenlodge and the Genuss-Station at the Welles ferry offer further culinary highlights of the Saarschleifenland. Through Dreisbach, it continues along the Saar again towards the cider town Merzig. From the yacht harbor, it goes over the Hilbringer Bridge back to the starting point at the Stadthalle.
