The Sagenweg is a roughly 23 km long, family-friendly cycling route that connects the towns of Greiz and Zeulenroda-Triebes and runs through the Pöllwitzer Forest. The motto is: "From the Zeulenrodaer Meer to the residences of the Reuß princes".

Historically, the region has a rich history closely connected with the Vogts—later the Reuß princes—who still lend their name to the Vogtland today. The already well-developed hiking and biking trail network is supplemented by the Sagenweg. Cyclists can look forward to a natural trail and impressive landscape as well as the tranquility of the Pöllwitzer Forest. The starting point is possible in both towns. Starting from the 2.28 km² large Zeulenrodaer Meer, which has been open for swimming since 2012, five information boards lead to cultural and historical backgrounds of the region up to Greiz. As the capital of what was once Germany's smallest principality, Greiz, with its three castles, represents a unique historical cultural site. Between the two towns lies the formerly militarily used Pöllwitzer Forest. As a DBU Natural Heritage Site, conservation goals and nature experience are the focus today. A 650-meter-long moor adventure path with a lookout tower as well as a nature trail, both directly on the Sagenweg, provide information about the natural environment of forest and moor.

Directions

Our route starts at the hiking car park, directly on the shore of the Zeulenrodaer Meer. From there, it goes eastward to the Lower Zeulenroda station in the district of Untere Hardt. Then we follow the railway line a little south and cross it at the first opportunity.

Now we cycle slightly uphill through the Pöllwitzer Forest. At the highest point of the route, there is a moor adventure trail, where we should calmly get off the bike. Then our path leads slightly downhill to Stern (Erbengrün), where we cross the street, then on a field road to Moschwitz and Untergrochlitz. Upon reaching the federal highway, we turn right, cross the Weiße Elster, and finally reach Greiz, where we should especially take a look at the beautiful castle garden.
