ATTENTION: Important notice: Hiking trail at Heinrichsburg Castle in Diesbar-Seußlitz closed from 18.05.26 due to construction work

Due to extensive construction work in the area of Heinrichsburg Castle in Seußlitz, the hiking trail (staircase) will be fully closed from 18.05. to probably 19.06.2026. Please note that the path to Heinrichsburg is a dead end during this time (the viewpoint at Heinrichsburg from the forest road is accessible).

Detour route description from Diesbar to Seußlitz from "Schönster Weinsicht":

Walk back to the large vineyard gate, then turn left along the path through the vineyards towards Seußlitz. At the "Eckholz" archaeological signpost 4, turn right through the gate and take the "Schmiedebergweg" meadow path towards Seußlitz. When you reach the forest road (opposite the castle park), turn left along the forest road. The detour ends below Heinrichsburg/at the exit to the castle park.

Detour route description from Seußlitz to the "Schönste Weinsicht":

You have arrived on Forststraße at the castle park exit/below Heinrichsburg Castle and now keep left. From the staircase with sandstone figures to Heinrichsburg Castle, walk approx. 100 m further along the forest road, then turn right up the meadow path "Schmiedebergweg" and follow the path to the gate at "Eckholz" with the archaeological plaque station 4. Here you turn left onto the path through the vineyards and walk to the vineyard gate. Before the large vineyard gate, you can turn right and take a detour to the "Schönste Weinsicht" or continue straight ahead without taking a detour (detour completed).

You will also find corresponding detour signs on site.

If you do not wish to ascend or descend via the Wiesenweg, you would have to take Radewitzer Straße in the direction of Forststraße without the vineyard.

There is a special website for the Saxon Wine Trail with all the information about the individual stages, maps, interesting sights, places to stop for refreshments and much more:

The Saxon Wine Trail connects the gems of the Dresden region along the Elbe and leads to the most beautiful vineyards, viewpoints and wine cellars. Baroque and modern Dresden, picturesque Pirna, the villa and garden town of Radebeul and the porcelain town of Meissen - these are just some of the historically significant stops along the Saxon Wine Trail. Striking evidence of over 850 years of viticulture in the Elbe Valley can be found alongside modern wineries and cozy wine taverns. Here you can taste the rare wines of more than 60 grape varieties - including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, as well as Traminer, Scheurebe and Goldriesling, which is only grown here on the Elbe.

Walking from Pirna to Dresden, hikers and wine lovers will pass beautiful villas and magnificent castles. A detour into Dresden's old town takes you to the Zwinger, Semper Opera House and Frauenkirche. In Radebeul, hikers should take time to visit the Hoflößnitz Saxon Wine Museum and Europe's first adventure winery at Schloss Wackerbarth. The route continues to Meissen: The imposing castle hill with the cathedral and Albrechtsburg Castle can be seen from afar. The WeinErlebnisWelt of the Sächsische Winzergenossenschaft Meißen winegrowers' cooperative provides extraordinary insights into the past and present of winegrowing. At the end of the trail, the winegrowers and innkeepers of the numerous historic wine taverns in Diesbar-Seußlitz invite you to stop by.

The Saxon Wine Trail is divided into 6 daily stages with an average of 15 to 18 km or 5 to 6 hours of walking per day.

The route is not barrier-free.

The logo and marker of the Saxon Wine Trail is a red grape with a red S above it, supplemented by the words Saxon Wine Trail.

Attention! Please find out about the opening times of the various refreshment stops along the way before starting your hike so that you are not faced with closed doors. For example, wine taverns are usually only open at weekends or in spring and fall.

Stage 1: From Pirna to Dresden-Pillnitz

The Saxon Wine Trail begins where the first large vineyards once appeared on the Elbe: in Pirna. Today, there are only small vineyards here, but numerous examples of historical viticulture. Cultural highlights on the first stage of the wine trail are the Richard Wagner sites in Graupa as well as Pillnitz Castle and the vineyard church in the middle of the Pillnitz Royal Vineyard.

Stage 2: From Dresden-Pillnitz to Dresden-Wilder Mann

This stage runs on predominantly asphalted roads with little traffic and leads past all the vineyards in the Dresden city area as well as stately villas and wine-growing gems. Fantastic views of the Elbe valley, the Carl Maria von Weber Museum, the Wachwitz rhododendron garden and Dresden's Elbe castles make this "urban" section of the route well worthwhile.

Stage 3: From Dresden-Wilder Mann to Radebeul-Zitzschewig

Initially still in Dresden, one of the most beautiful sections of the wine trail begins in Radebeul: lovingly renovated winegrowers' houses, small castles, the longest staircase in Saxony in the middle of the vineyards and the historic Hoflößnitz winery are real gems along the way. Finally, Schloss Wackerbarth, Europe's first adventure winery, invites you to events and daily guided tours.

Stage 4: From Radebeul-Zitzschewig to Oberau

On this stage, you only pass a few vineyards in Coswig and Weinböhla, but there are great viewpoints - some from historic towers - on the Weinböhla heights. Architectural highlights include the Gellerthaus, Oberau Castle and Germany's oldest railroad station in Niederau.

Stage 5: From Oberau to Meißen

After crossing the village of Niederau with its small tower windmill and the Nassau nature reserve, you reach the Spaargebirge, a mountain range between the wine village of Sörnewitz and Meißen. The hiking trail leads past vineyards, wineries and historical evidence of winegrowing, but also to unique vantage points overlooking the Elbe. Finally, you reach the wine and porcelain town of Meissen with the Wine Experience World of the Meissen Winegrowers' Cooperative.

Stage 6: From Meißen to Diesbar-Seußlitz

If you want to visit the historic old town, Albrechtsburg Castle and the cathedral or the world-famous porcelain manufactory, you have to change sides of the Elbe, as the wine trail runs along the right bank of the Elbe. The last stage is mainly above the vineyards. Proschwitz Castle, beautifully renovated village churches and numerous wine taverns line the trail, which also features a Bronze Age rampart and further panoramic views of the Elbe landscape. The picturesque Elbe wine village of Diesbar-Seußlitz marks the end of the Saxon Wine Trail.
