The popular hiking trail “Seußlitzer Weinsichttour” is about 4.5 km long and is a nature-oriented, informative, easy, and relaxing loop trail. Here, you can experience both nature and culture in equal measure.
The trail starts and ends at the parking lot in Seußlitz. From there, the path turns right through Seußlitz Castle Park into the beautiful “Seußlitzer Grund” nature reserve, with its ponds and diverse flora and fauna. Along the way, there are plenty of places to rest and relax. Once you’ve walked along the Seußlitz stream “Bockau” and reached the trout pond (the third pond along the trail) with its fish ladder, the ascent to “Grüne Warte” begins after the wooden bridge . Here you’ll reach the 184-meter-high “Goldkuppe, ” Saxony’s largest Bronze Age rampart (400 x 1,100 meters). Among the extensive vineyards here lies the “Schönste Weinsicht 2020” (Most Beautiful Vineyard View 2020), offering a breathtaking view across the Elbe. You can relax and enjoy this beautiful view from the wave-shaped lounger set up there. The path through the vineyards also offers additional beautiful panoramic and down-views of the Elbe Valley and the Göhrischfelsen on the opposite bank of the Elbe.
After walking a few meters through the forest, you’ll reach the observation terrace of the Heinrichsburg, a garden house built in 1728 by the then-lord of the castle, Heinrich von Bünau, based on plans by George Bähr. From here, you also have a breathtaking view of Seußlitz Castle and Park, the adjacent George Bähr Church—which is well worth seeing— with its historic cemetery, the Luisenburg across the way (also built as a garden house), the Elbe ferry to Niederlommatzsch, and Hirschstein Castle on the other side of the Elbe. At the viewing platform, you’ll find an audio station for the “Saxon Wine Hiking Trail.” Here, you can learn many interesting and informative facts about the area.
From Heinrichsburg, the path leads down a few steps, past the sandstone figures meant to represent the 12 months. They were created by Balthasar Permoser, one of the most famous Baroque sculptors. After a short walk along the forest road, you can turn right into the French section of the Seußlitz Castle Park and explore the grounds at your leisure.
Next to Seußlitz Castle—which, unfortunately, is not open to the public—is the “Haus des Gastes” (Guest House), which houses the tourist information office, the nature conservation center, and free exhibitions. A café and a restaurant, the Elbe ferry for cyclists and pedestrians, the passenger boat offering sightseeing cruises, the steamboat arriving from Dresden, and wineries where you can stop for a bite to eat round out the tourist offerings at the start and finish points of the “Seußlitz Wine Scenic Tour.”
