A relaxed route with fascinating panoramic views and imaginative fairy-tale magic

This varied circular route starts at the parking lot below the Pöhlberg. A short ascent leads to the "Butterfässer" – a striking basalt rock formation that fascinates in its primeval form on the left side of the path. Opposite, the middle Pöhlberg trail branches off, which hikers now follow – a path recently dotted with small fairy tale stations, enchanting especially families with children.

Already after a few steps, a magnificent panorama opens up: the view stretches over fields, rows of trees, and villages to the mountain ranges of the Ore Mountains – with Keilberg and Fichtelberg on the horizon. This wide landscape accompanies hikers on the first half of the circular hike, inviting them to marvel and pause again and again.

About halfway along, a detour to the St. Briccius mine can be made – a testimony to historical mining. However, this short detour is recommended only for sure-footed hikers.

The further route leads gently through lush mixed forest, past a former quarry with old clay pits as well as the former site of the ski jump, which today exists only as history. Finally, the circuit meets the old bobsleigh track and ends again at the starting point – filled with impressive views, tranquil nature, and a touch of fairy tale magic.

Directions

The starting point of the hike is the parking lot at Mischplatz. From here you walk uphill to the large square with the basalt columns. There, hikers turn right onto a narrow path and follow the signs for the middle circular route.

About halfway along the route, there is the opportunity to follow the signs to the St. Briccius mine. This detour is recommended only for sure-footed hikers. Afterwards, you return the same way and continue your hike on the circular route until you reach the old bobsleigh track. There, the path leads right downhill and finally ends at the road opposite the parking lot.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A detour to the Pöhlberg with its tower is well worth it, as is a visit to the city center of Annaberg-Buchholz with its many highlights.
